Are You Being Abusive?

Here are some top behaviors that can be considered abusive

  •  Do you constantly check up on your partner and accuse her or him of cheating or lying?
  •  Are you extremely jealous or possessive?
  •  Do you have an explosive temper?
  •  Have you hit, kicked, shoved, or thrown things at your partner?
  •  Do you constantly criticize or insult your partner?
  •  Do you become violent when you use drugs or alcohol?

Boys Can Be Victims, Too

Just because you’re a guy doesn’t mean you can’t be a victim of teen dating abuse. Statistically, girls are more likely to be the victims of teen dating abuse, but boys can be victims, too. In fact, in one study conducted in 2008, 13% of Latino 7th grade boys reported being physically abused by their partner.1 About one in ten high school students, 9.8 percent, reported being hit, slapped, punched or in some way physically abused by a partner.2 What these facts point out is that teen dating abuse crosses all genders, races, sexual orientations and economic factors.

Lauren Astley

Our hearts go out to the family of Lauren Astley, 18, of Wayland, Massachusetts, allegedly murdered by her ex-boyfriend. “We do believe this to be a case of teen dating violence,’’ said Gerard T. Leone Jr., Middlesex district attorney. “It’s a classic fatal paradigm that we see around teen dating relationships. We are very confident it was about power and control.”
